Hello World
Jon Starts Talking
A bunch of people don’t understand economics. And a bunch of people who don’t understand think they DO understand economics. It’s not entirely their fault. There is no shortage of “economists” on television, in the news, and on social media pushing political narratives dressed up as economics.
It shouldn’t be this easy to manipulate people. The fundamental concepts of economics are not at all difficult to grasp. When I went back to school in 2010 for an accounting degree, I was amazed by the first semesters of macroeconomics and microeconomics. The patterns I had seen in reality had clear explanations. Things actually made sense. Like most Texans, I had taken economics in high school, but (also like most Texans, I suspect) none of it had really stuck with me after graduation. Whether the knowledge was new or not, it certainly felt new.
Anyway, that’s going to be the topic here, at least starting out. The basic concepts of economics, starting from the very beginning, without a lot of fluff and without a lot of math. I actually like math, but many people don’t. And since there’s no reason to make it harder than necessary to learn something that desperately needs to be learned, math will be optional unless it’s really necessary.
If you think you’re not interested in economics…maybe give it a chance. I’m not going to use fancy words where plain ones will do, and I’m not going to throw a bunch of complex graphs at you. More important than either of those, I’m not going to ask you to believe something just because I say so. Everything is going to start with observations you can make (and likely already have made) on your own.
Okay, this is enough introduction. We’ll get started next time.
